History
Durmstrang was founded over seven hundred years ago. In the centuries since, it has developed a reputation for intolerance of Muggle-borns and an emphasis on the Dark Arts. In fact Durmstrang at one time only admitted Purebloods. The school is unplottable and hidden from Muggles and wizards from rival institutions, but Durmstrang is thought to be located in Bulgaria. The castle is also though to be nestled near lakes and mountains, which the students enjoy during warmer months. The weather at Durmstrang is cold, and the days in winter are very short, while in summer they're very long. However, despite sometimes frigid weather students there have a great deal of freedom; they are permitted to fly over the extensive grounds as being magically hidden there is never a fear of Muggles seeing them.
Because of their training and interest in Dark Magic, the Durmstrang students share a bond with Slytherin House from Hogwarts. Students at the Institute were once primarily focused on learning curses and jinxes, rather than just how to defend themselves against them.
For several years the High Master was a former Death Eater, Igor Karkaroff. The 1994-1995 school year was the year of the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts, to which Durmstrang sent a delegation with the Headmaster. The delegation arrived in a ghostly-looking ship through a whirlpool in the middle of the Hogwarts Lake. However, Karkaroff fled at the end of the 1994-1995 school year, when Voldemort was believed to have returned.
In the following months from Karkaroff's disappearance a new Highmaster was assigned to Durmstrang. Highmaster Dimitrius Schröder, a well known Auror. He was not a favorite amongst the students or many of the professors in his time as he never quite saw eye to eye in the studying of "Dark Arts" alone however; he continued his teaching at the school for many years until he was finally granted the position of Highmaster from the Ministry.
Her first rule of business was to break the "Pure-Blood" tradition and open the school to ALL Witches and Wizards. Many have supported her decisions, but like wise there are many student, parents and even professors who strongly disagree with what is happening to their school.
The Castle
The Durmstrang Main castle has only four floors however there are three separate houses that are connected to the main castle through underground passageways. The Buildings are generally cool and dark as the fires are only lit when needed for magic.
The Main castle is sparsely furnished, as the Durmstrang delegation was so impressed with Hogwarts' starry ceiling and gold dishes. In sight of having a new Highmaster, Durmstrang has slowly started to change its appearance from a dungeon like look to a warmer looking educational institute.
The Uniform
The weather in Bulgaria is commonly cool and crisp – only the summer months offer warm sun and long days. Thus, the students main uniform consists of; deep red robes covered by thick fur capes. Each uniform has a crest embodied on the left side a different color dragon depending on which house they belong to.
The students Dress robes are similar in style, possessing fur covered robes only of a brighter red. The students dress robes do not possess individual house crests but the complete full school crests in gold.

The three houses of Durmstrang are:
Jungen, Mädchen, and Mischung.
